Quiet America

beautiful, lower-crime places to wander, from Coeur d'Alene to the Blue Ridge

How these places were picked

Each place had to be beautiful, safer than the US average on reported crime, and either a town of 5,000+ people or within about 30–40 minutes of one.

  • Crime: FBI Crime Data Explorer, offences reported by the local police department (or the county sheriff where a place has no police of its own), per 1,000 residents. Mostly 2024; a few places only have complete data for 2023 or 2022, and that year's US average is used for comparison. US average for 2024: 3.63 violent and 17.67 property crimes per 1,000.
  • Population: 2020 US Census.
  • Locations: OpenStreetMap; 3D terrain from AWS Terrain Tiles; imagery from Esri World Imagery.

Safe both violent and property crime below the US average.
Mixed violent crime low, but property crime at or above average (common in tourist towns, where visitors inflate per-resident rates).
Stretch low crime and too beautiful to leave out, but it breaks the 5,000-people rule.

Small towns swing a lot from year to year: one bad month can double a rate in a town of 2,000. Treat these numbers as a rough guide, not a guarantee.
